I have manual hubs and the dash buttons, the dash buttons dont turn on, so im thinking im going to need to replace a few things first, but before doing that i was wondering if there is a way to swap to the manual 4x4 shifter? with it still being an auto? thanks in advance

I wouldn't worry about switching it if I were you. Just lock your hubs before pushing the button.

As for your 4x4 not working. Check the back drivers side panel where you lug tool should be. You'll see a black box with a small metal heat speader on it. turn you key on or start your explorer then push the white button on that box. It's your 4x4 control module, It should flash telling you it's working. If that's not your problem it's most likely your transfer case shift motor. That's a quick $75 to 80 bucks. there is a how to on here about rebuilding it if your interested in that. I had trouble following it and understanding it so I found a used replacement for $5 :)

Thanks im going to go check that light thing right now actually lol, next i really dont mind getting a new one on here, but is there a way if i was to take it off and rebuild it that i could still drive the car with it off? sorry if it s dumb question, this is my first 4x4

The only problem I would see when driving without the transfer case shift motor would be dirt or water getting into the plug on it.

Here is a 4x4 trouble shooting thread

here is the shift motor rebuild

I've read it several times and I still get lost on it. Guess it was not made for me :p:

So the white button on it right and a red light will come on? if so its not blinking, i hope that its just that the module is bad and i can get this up and running soon am i right?

Sorry I feel stupid. There are 3 plugs on the modulator, The two closest together have to be unplugged before you check it. It won't hurt it if they are not unplugged but i simply forgot. I've not messed with mine for months.

Sorry about that, Don't want to waste your time running in and out :banghead:

I ended up switching mine out then remembered I had to turn the key on I felt retarded that time. Good thing the owner of that junk yard is a family friend or I wouldn't been able to take it back.

About broke my arm trying to take it out without pulling that panel off. Whatever anyone says you can get it out without taking the panel off but it's a real PITA.

.....Back module blinks 4 times, so that means good right?

Yeah it's good. Guess it's time we both pull our shift motors off. I've not went and pulled my replacement off my friends junk explorer yet either. Maybe I'll have a backup shift motor later on :p:

So are they normally go out? there is about 10-15 4x4 explorers in the local junk yard, and i was thinking about grabbing a few of the trasfer cases, would it be worth it or should i just go with new?

I'd say it's worth it as long as they are good. I don't even know if my replacement one is good yet or not but it's not like changing my vacuum modulator, It takes less then ten minutes to pull one. I figured five bucks either way I'm not losing out on much. Just another one to rebuild if it doesn't work.

Ok i think that i will go grab a couple and if either dont work ill then try the rebuilding guide on here, thanks for the help

heres a 4x4question i was gong up hllin the snow and popped out of 4wheel drive what caused that to happen? i dont know f it went in to neutral or the tire spun out.

Your welcome. There are a lot of friendly helpful explorer owners here. They helped me so I kinda stuck around and read up on the posts. If I don't know something I just ask and they are always helpful.

Sorry missed that post, Was getting ready for bed I need to be up at 8am and it's almost 3am.

I would say your hub may be slipping? I would check the link to the 4x4 trouble shooting thread I posted and test your hubs.

I started sneezing and couldn't stop, Otherwise I would be sleeping like a baby. My son can sleep in his knees I don't know how the hell he can do that. But I heard babies don't have kneecaps until they are about 2 years old but maybe the person who said that is just insane :D

I tore my T/C shift motor apart today.

FYI you'll need a 10mm and 13mm socket to remove it.

My bumpstop looked to be in two pieces but there has to be more of it somewhere. No way those two pieces were the one in Brain's picture on the writeup.

Now I may just use a piece of rubber tube like Spdrcer34 did on his. hum... tricky little fart.

That little bumpstop was in pieces in my case, I used a piece of vacuum hose and it has been fine since...

I was playing with mine after putting a piece of tube on it and managed to lose one of the springs in my living room
Will try to find one tomorrow or take one from my $5 T/C shift motors replacement before it gets rebuilt :(

Now I do feel stupid, But at least my son has went with his mother now that it's 12:30 here and around 40 degrees outside. :splat:

Edit: I found it so woohoo. Almost done piecing it back together, Will update with results asap but remember. It's now 1:40am here and 45 degrees outside, Don't expect it to be a five minutes job. lol
