I have a '92 explorer 4x4. It has push button 4 wheel and auto locking hubs. But the 4 wheel doesn't work. Here is what is going on. The lights on the dashboard switch will light up for no reason and stay on for a while(not blinking but steady). When u push the button nothing happens( they either stay lite or stay off). Pulled switch and checked to see if there is power to it, all but one seems to be getting power. Checked the computer in rear(by washerfluid reserve) by removing connectors, putting ignition in on position but not starting it. Then pushed the white button and the LED light didn't light up. Also, tried it with leaving the connectors on.

What could the problem be? Is it not getting power somewhere? Possible the computer?

Most likely a bad shift motor... try tapping it LIGHTLY with a hammer...

tried that does nothing! Tried it also when the switch light was on. Still won't engage.

Jack up all four tires and see if the front drive shaft is turning. If it is then it is possibly the auto hubs. Also the shift motor may have gone out completly.

Found the problem 4x4 computer in the rear. Called Ford garage the parts man didn't even know it was there. Then he said that it would be over $500 for a new one. Bought used one for $40 and works like a champ!

4x4 prob

You said you replaced the "computer" in the rear. Exactly where is it located and what does it look like. My front drive doesn't work either.

It is over the left rear wheel well I think. Another member removed it thinking it was an amplifier. Search for 4x4 controller. There were pics of it posted within the last month on another thread. You can also read about it on the Singleton site. Link is posted in the Useful Threads forum.

I have that exact same problem, 91 Explorer XLT, Manual Hubs (Brand New Warns) I was driving home from work, and noticed the 4-wheel and Low Range lights had come on. I push the buttons and the lights go out as long as I hold the button, If I shift into Neutral the lights go out. I removed my controller to make the lights go out (it annoys me) I knoe for a fact that the case is not in 4WD and the hubs are unlocked. Btw, what is that little white button and led light on the controller for?? I push it and nothing happens.

You guys are lucky! My lights are on and off all the time. (Dim, never on-on) I rebuild my shift motor, nothing! my four wheel drive works as long as I climb under the truck and turn the shaft to 4H. I know the switch works, I tried it in another truck. I Know it's not the ECM. I tried it another truck, WORKED! My motor turns, I hooked it up the a 12 V battery and all was good. I'm lost.

You need to check out the shift motor link in my sig as well as searching for others such as Shift motor Rebuild.
