4X4 High/Low flash of death

There is no speedo cable in your rig. Its just sensor wires from the VSS.

The shift motor only works for low range. It can only be activated while stopped, in neutral, and the brake pedal depressed. Same for taking it out of low range.

4wd H can be activated on the fly as it does nothing for the shift motor. It only sends a signal to the clutch pack that is used for 4wh.

There is a chance of internal damage to the t-case if the lights are blinking.

No ABS light means you have a good circuit, so I would forget about that all together.

There are more things that can be wrong, such as the GEM, and 4x4 module. Just have to keep digging with it.

Have you checked the fluid level in the t-case yet? What color is it? Was it low? Do you see any signs of a leak? Check the obvious first.

Once again everyone thank you for the info. I ment to say the speedo Needle On the dash. I do have a leak. I just had it in the shop. One of the universal joints in the front Drive shaft was starting to go. He also said he had to add a quart of fluid to the Transfer case. It could well be that Transfer case has internal damage. I might just have to make it until spring when I can pull the case apart and see what's going on.

Ok well it's snowing here in NY. I tried to put the truck in 4x4 high. It won't engage at all. The rear wheels just spin and the Lights says 4X4 high light was on but not blinking.

Hello again. I just had the explorer wheels off the ground. I did a few test. I turn the truck on and put it in 4 high. I put it in drive and all 4 wheels move under power. Now I stop all the wheels and put the transmission in Nuetral.

Now is this normal? I went under and turn the rear drive shaft. The front shaft started to turn with it. But once I tried to turn the front shaft. The rear shaft did not turn with it.

So From this test I do know the 4x4 system is working somewhat. I know the transfercase motor is working.

What do you guys think about this.

While its on stands, try this. Place it in 4wd low, shut it off, place gear selector in neutral.

Spin the rear shaft. Does the front turn?

Spin the front shaft. Does the front wheels turn?

Slip test for control trac.

Find someplace that is slippery. Snow, ice, mud, gravel, loose dirt, grass, will all work. Place in 4wd high. Turn the wheel all the way in one direction. Have someone outside the rig and at a safe distance to observe. Punch the throttle to spin the rear tires. The fronts should kick in if the system is working correctly. If the rears are spinning for a period of time, and the fronts never kick in, there is a problem.

If the rears spin, & the fronts do not:
A) Is the ABS light on?.....................T-case wont engage if a fault in ABS circuit

B) Is the 4x4 lights flashing?..............T-case issue( shift motor, or internal), Relays, Vac lines or Vac canister malfunction.

C) Is the O/D light flashing?................Trans is in limp mode

When I get a chance to do this I will. But My ABS light and O/D lights are not flashing and have never flashed. I just had the 4X4 High/low lights flash 6 times every 2 to 3 minutes.

I just changed out the VSS sensor yesterday and notice the X idles much better. It doesn't want to stall when coming to a stop either.

This may not be the case, my 98 sport has the ABS light on (and has no ABS, as I have tested in slick conditions) but will still automatically engage 4w-high upon rear-wheel slippage.

Also, I found index marks on the t-case casting near(under?) the shift motor that indicated 2w, 4h, 4l at different angles. This would lead me to believe that the shift motor can be in play for 4w-high mode. Am I wrong?

edit: and I have the speed-sensor-equipped t-case variant

Could that be caused by faulty shift motor (or wiring)?

es 1997 ranger 4wd

What year is vehicle? Mine does not have the 2-wire dingy coming out of the case, just the clutch wire. imp
