I have the exact same problem. It didn't do it before I unhooked my battery, but now it won't go away. This is the ony problem I have with the truck at the moment and kind of need it considering its dropped almost 3 inches of snow in the last 6 hours.

Common problem. Do a search and you will find the answers you need.
Could be a problem with the t-case shift motor or the 4x4 module.

I dont know much about genII explorers, but I dont think it would throw a code.

ok had some time to check some things out today it dose go into 4x4 and low but it wont stay in i drive down the road a couple miles and the lights start flashing again so i tried to unhook the battery for about a hour but still the same i would think that it the 4x4 module was bad (the one behind the glove box) the 4x4 wouldnt work at all any ideas also i frogot that when stoping right before i come to a complet stop the abs kicks in like it was sliding even on dry roads could this be part of the problem the sensor in the rear axle mabey?

Run a search for "4wd lights flashing" and search titles only. I'm having a similar issue to yours and there is a TON of informaiton if you run that search.
