I am buying a 92 Explorer Eddie Bauer 4x4, but the 4x4 isn't working. We tried engaging it in neutral with the brake on and otherwise, also disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes, but nothing has worked. Any help would be appreciated. Also the fan blower isn't working on the ac and heat. If I replace the fan bloweer motor will this do the trick, and about how much do they run? Thanks for all the helo in advance!

Hi, and welcome to the best Explorer site.
I have a 91 EB 4x4 and i push in the clutch while i push the button to engage the 4x4. just a few questions :
Did you check all the fuses ?
Do the 4x4 lights on the swith or the dash come on but still not engage?
could be alot of things. need to be a little more specific.

Yes, we did check all the fuses and all seems ok, we don't get any lights at all on the 4x4 that is is on and it is an automatic transmission. Does that help any? Oh, we also checked underneath the explorer and it didn't look like anything was loose or disconnected.
quote:
Originally posted by Explorer Mom:

When you push the buton on the dash is there a click that comes from the rear truck (ie rear conpartment were the jack is). If not the 4x4 computer might be bad. If there is a click it might be the shift motor...

Hope this helps...

If there is a lite clicking sound when you push the button then you might want to look at the 4x4 transfer case motor. They have a tendancy to go bad. To replace them it is around $200-300. There is a way to clean the brushes on the motor which helped mine. Either under Explorer tips or Explorer resourses there is a place to look up tech tips and under transfer case it gives detailed instructions on how to remove and clean the motor. It sounds harder than it is. It only took me about an hour and mine works better now than before.
