Hello,My 4x4 quit working on my 1995 xlt.It has always worked fine.Untill a couple of weeks ago it quit and the lights will flash 6 times while driving down the road.I put on a new transfercase shift motor. And still the same thing nothing except for a click coming from the front passenger side fender.Does any one have any ideas what could be wrong with it?This is my wifes vehicle and she will need 4x4 soon.As winter is aproaching.Any help would be greatly apreciated.
Thanks Ron

does the 4x4 lights in the dash cluster illuminate and cycle off when you start the truck?

Yes 4x4 hi and lo lights come on when started. And then go back off!!

Try searching the forum for "6 flashes" or "6 blinks" -- this comes up at least once a month.

Ok well I have now searched this forum like I was told. But guess what no luck.I have changed both hall sensors, vss, shift motor, relays, gem.Still 6 flashes every 2 minutes.I here a click coming from the riders side front. But that is it can any one help me with this.I am at wits end.It has also been in 2 different shops and they can not get it either.

Have you disconnected the battery for 5 or so minutes?

What's the angry faces about?

I don't think you researched enough, because the answer is at this site somewhere... but those red faces don't warrant attention. Ease up.

My red faces are for my own wits end, not anyones elses on this site. Just asking for any advice, not rudeness. I have searched this site plenty, and as for that link. My ignition, and locks have not been tampered with & are working fine. thanks

Understood...

Well, hope you get an answer soon because that issue has come up... so somebody knows what's up... If I find it, I'll post it here for you :salute:

Thanks, I will keep looking also. It's just frustrating!

If the lights are blinking, the system has detected a fault and has stored a code. Unfortunately, without knowing what the code is, you can spend all the time and money in the world throwing parts at it and never find the problem. However, you can also spend an hour at the dealer having them run the GEM DTCs and determine where, exactly, the problem is. The DTC stored in the GEM will almost pinpoint the problem precisely in a matter of minutes....

If you call around, some shops with high-end diagnostic scanners (NGS or WDS) will be able to check it out for you. AutoZone's scanner's won't.

Thanks, I will try new fluid in transfer case. I had the codes read at a shop, they pin pointed it down to the GEM. I bought a new GEM last week, and still no luck.

Well, new fluid in t-case & still no luck.

Replacing the GEM may not have solved the problem, but that doesn't mean that there is no code stored. What specific code showed up originally? What code is stored currently? What troubleshooting and diagnosing did they do before they came to the conclusion that the GEM was bad in the first place? There is no code that says, 'GEM is bad', but there are a number of problems that can be traced back to the GEM as the failure item. However, those pinpoint tests are quite involved. They require a fair amount of electrical checking and troubleshooting before any of them get to the 'Replace GEM' step. I suspect the mechanic jumped the gun in calling it a bad GEM.
