I just got a 1993 ford explorer. Automatic transmission with the push button 4 wheel drive. The 4 wheel drive does not work and will not come on. I was wondering if maybe someone could possible tell me what it might be. I have never myself owned a 4x4 but where i currently now live I really need one cause the road is impossible for a car if it rains. Thanks in advance for any help.

Brown wire mod applies to 2nd gen Explorers.

Can you be more specific as to what isn't working? The two most common failure modes for a generic "4wd doesn't work" are the hubs not engaging or the transfer case not engaging. The best way to fix the problem depends on which scenario we are looking at. Do the 4x4 lights on the dash come on?

That usually points to a problem with the shift motor. We have at least one if not two good write-ups here on how to remove, dissassemble, and clean/rebuild the shift motor. It's pretty likely that's what you need.
