4x4 not working

thanks for taking the time to read this.On my 96 explorer sport the 4x4 is not working its not engaging and the light does not come on the dash. where to start? thanks again

start by putting truck in neutral while running, engage 4low. If you hear a clunk under you then it's probably the front diff, solenoids or vacuum. If there's no noise, start at the transfer case
