4x4 problem?

I have a 97 ex XLT 4x4. I went to my friends farm and had a little fun in the mud until I got stuck pretty good. I had to get pulled out by a suzuki samurai. Seems like when I switch it from auto to 4x4 low it doesnt show that its in low, it just says 4WD. I'll switch it from 4x4 high to 4x4 low and it just says 4WD. I dont know if i messed anything up.

When you try to put it in low range are you stopped, in neutral, with your foot on the brake?

usually in park, with foot on the brake. I dont recall it having this problem before.
