I found this sight because my '02 Explorer was having problems with the 4X4 having a mind of it's own. This is my problem: The 4X4 high light on the dash lights up when starting the vehicle and goes off and on for about the first 10 minutes of driving. A couple of times when backing up it goes into 4X4 all by itself. When I put the vehicle in N and go through the high, low and back to auto cycle none of the lights respond correctly. The 4X4 doesn't actually engage when you push the buttons.
After looking through some posts my problem seemed to be similar to others that had replaced their 4X4 module and problem solved. I question if maybe the switch could also be a problem as well?
So, I call several shops because I have only gone to the dealer for minor things and don't know a reputable shop. One shop seemed okay and I went there. They ran a diagnostic and pulled the codes. I remember one being P1862 which is the Transmission Transfer Case Contact Place Power Circuit Failure and two others that said the Contact Plate B Circuit Failure and I think the C Plate as well but can't remember for sure. This shop said these codes pointed to the 4X4 shift motor (module) was the problem so they were going to replace it.
Picked up the Explorer and drove home. There come the lights again. Went back to the shop the next morning and they kept the vehicle, called and said the wrong part was put in, the supply shop said the '01 part would work but doesn't. We told them that Napa had the part for about $70 less than the dealer so he ordered it. He said when he received it that is wasn't the correct part and he would get one from the dealer. The dealer part came and that didn't fix the 4X4 problem either.
Soooo, now I have a new 4X4 motor and the shop said to bring it back in 4 days, and they'll see if they can figure out what the problem is.
If anyone can help with some advice as to what they think should be checked I would sure appreciate it. I did so much research before taking it into a shop so there wouldn't be any glitches and now this, so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for listening!
