what's the best thing to do for the truck to get it to stop swaying so much when going slow over bumps and ****.. it's the type of swaying that goes away once i start driving again but when i go sideways over bumps like backing out of driveways and **** it sways back and forth like crazy... the sway bars look to be in good shape, no movement and in good condition... im guessing new shocks...... and what else???

thanks for all replies

yup, sounds like shocks.

push down on your bumper 2 or 3 times, then let go, if it bounces more than 3 or 4 times, replace your shocks.

shocks keep it from bouncing, springs make it bounce. id say its your sway bars. disconnect them and see if it makes the affect worse. if not, you need new sway bars.

Gensic, an Explorer Express rear sway bar will get rid of the swaying, and will also give better handling. It's the single best mod that I've done to mine. Poly bushings and stiffer shocks will also help.....

thanks for the info.. im going to look into that sway bar in the rear... as long as i can sell my brush guard then i should have the money for that....

The rear bar is $179.95; sometimes they'll have a group buy that will save $20, or $40 for both front and rear. Since your's is a 97, both front and rear bars would be the way to go. After putting them on, you won't believe it's the same vehicle......
Anti-Sway Bars

If you have the orig. shocks its probably time to change them. OEM shocks are good for about 50,00 miles. Even with new shocks your gonna get some of that rocking driving over uneven bumps at very low speed. Its just the nature of the beast. Sway bars will help you at higher speeds but will do nothing for backing over bumps.

thats the thing.. i have no high speed troubles.. it's only low speeds that make the car sway when i hit big bumps that send me either direction

When I first bought my Sport, the wife complained of the rocking side to side when going over speed bumps. After installing the EE rear anti-sway bar, the rocking was greatly reduced. I won't say it's completely gone, but it's hardly noticeable anymore. New shocks would probably take care of the rest of the sway, since mine are the originals with 55K on them.

sounds like that's what i need to do then.. get the EE bar, thanks for all the advice.. this should be my next project..... its just for a college student with a small job it's hard to blow 170+$ on a sway bar and over 100$ on new shocks just to get rid of some swaying at slow speeds.... so we'll see i guess... thanks for all the replies

Gensic, if you don't want to buy new bars or shocks right now, check into new polyurethane bushings for the existing bars. They are much firmer than the stock rubber bushings, and will reduce the sway some. You can get them in any size, and I've seen them as low as $10 a set.
