4X4 problems.

Nice to know there is a place to find out about some of the complicated things cars have on them now a days. I love my 98 explorer but with 140,000 miles it is starting to have things go wrong and all but a few I have been able to handle myself. The main problem is to be able to use my 4 wheel drive and be able to get out of it. It gets stuck in 4 wheel and one time I had to drive around for about 5 miles stopping backing up an pulling forward slowly and then backing up until it finally let go. I think it is the switch but I don't know th first thing about it. Any Help. Geo from Tacoma WA.

It would be helpful if you could describe 'stuck' in a bit more detail... High range or low range? Does the light stay on or go out when you shift back to 4auto? Does the drivetrain continue to feel 'bound-up' when cornering after disengaging? what were the temps? moon phase? What did you have for dinner the day before The more details you can give, the more accurate our help can be.
