I have a 92 explorer 4x4 and I believe the drivers side auto hub is shot but I want to go wheeling this weekend at mudfest here in Florida.

Is there anyway to lock up the d/s axle without using the hub? Maybe I could pull off the hub cover and weld something???? I can't afford to do the manual swap at the moment and I am desperate. None of the salvage yards in my area have an auto hub nor do they have any fords with the conversion already done... I looked hard. None of the parts stores carry the auto hub or repair kit either.

This vehicle most likely won't see anymore road time.

Please please please help..

Sorry you cannot remove the hub cover. It is an integral component which fits over the lug nuts and enables the axle to rotate the wheel.. The metal is mostly cast steel so I'm not sure it will weld very well if at all.

What I meant was, can I pull off the part that says "Automatic 4x4", weld something of somehow rig it, and then put the cover back on.

You mean to tell me nobody has ever had to fix one of these POS on the trail and had to rig it to limp home? It's bad enough I have to engage 4wd with pliers.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. If I find one in a JY before sunday, what should I look for as far as damage is concerned and what tools will I need to bring to get it off.

I'm sure you can remove the guts of the hub, weld it in its locked postion and re-install. Various members have blown the hubs apart on the trail and have done this to limp home... I just don't know how strong it would be for the abuse you may have in-store for it..
