Hey guys im located over in Australia. I have a 97 4.0L explorer 4x4 (only 4x4 relased in OZ) i am trying to convert it to 2x4 cause i am doing alot of work suspension wise to lay it on the ground. From what i gather, not ever seeing a 2x4 i need new,
-spindles
-rotors
-abs sensors
-dust and grease cabs
-bearings
I am looking int what i can do about the transmission, i know i will need a new tailshaft, which i will get made up over here as i want a splip joint just to cope better with the everchanging ride height, tranfer box going to rip out and look at a shop to seal up the hole in the gearbox. everything basically i am looking to do myself, including all the bag work, 4 linking, tubbing, chasis work. At the moment i need to try and source all these part i need, i have not had any luch with any wreckers i have emailed in the US.. So if anyone knows a good place i may be able to source all these parts could you PLEASE help.
i know a few of you guys have done the convert the opposite way round so any help and any parts i have missed could you please list them, no matter how small as i will not find them here.
Even better if any guys have all the 2x4 parts i need could contact or PM me and i will be happy to negotiate a price with you.
thankyou
Finney

IMHO....trade your 4x4 for a 2WD.....alot cheaper and less time involved.

Aloha, Mark

(only 4x4 released in australia) ummm cant trade it in dude. if only it was that easy

I've never heard of anyone wanting to change a 4x4 into a 4x2.. it's just STRANGE.. the ONLY advantage I can see, is a slight increase in fuel economy, and IMHO that's not justified..

well the dude wants to convert, so its his business and not ours to ask. Try ebay, they have a lot 2wd parts from what i saw. also our site sponsor fast parts network could probably set you up with new stuff at discounted prices.

thanks guys, will have a look. i cant bag or body drop my 4x4 and i just like doing things the hard way, so i need 2x4 gear

as a temporary step, you could just remove the front driveshaft ;)

BUMP, anyone with any ideas,

Tailshaft can be found on 2wd models for Mazda Bravo/Ford Courier in Australia. You might have a look at parts from those cars and compare?

1. Do the brown wire mod (Allows for 2WD setting)
2. Remove front driveshaft
3. Remove front CVs
4 Remove Axle housing (optional, you techinally can leave it in)
5. Replace 4WD knuckles with 2WD spindles
6. Parts to buy - 2WD spindles, inner and outer bearings, 2WD ABS sensors, 2WD rotors

Pretty easy actually. I've gone from 4WD to 2WD and back to 4WD using this method.
