what is the difference between the two?
the Haynes book says "4WD models are equippped with balance shaft chain attached to the crankshaft sprocket"

is this a del breaker? can an engine off a 1998 4x2 explorer fit into 98 4x4 vehicle?

What the heck does thsi mean and what does it do anyway?

Hi

The 4x4 motors have a balance shaft fitted to reduce engine vibration in the high torque 2000-3000 rpm range. The 2x2 motors doe not have this fitted. The only reason that I can think of is that 4x4 ECU and the 2x2 ECU have different torque curves.

Basically, the 2x2 engine will vibrate in the 2000-3000rpm range under load when fitted to a 4x4.

Deal breaker? I would have thought so.

What motor are we talking about? 4.0 ohv, 4.0 sohc or 5.0?

AFAIK the 4.0 OHV can be swapped between not only different years but different drivetrains.

There are people who over the years here on EF has swapped 4.0 ohv motors from different years. They normally use the short block + heads and then swap over the rest from their old vehicle.

For a 2nd gen I could see the pan possibly being different but thats about it. I'd check with some of the people who have done swaps to find out for sure.

I did check with www.car-part.com and when you look for engines it does ask if its 4x4 or 4x2 for the 4.0 Sohc motor only but of course it doesn't say "what" is different.. The rest of the motors it doesn't ask which implies that the rest are all interchangable.

Only the SOHC has a balance shaft & chain.

Is this only when it is in 4x4 engaged mode?

The vibration would be a problem in high torque conditions (as mentioned above it's probably tied to the tune in the engine computer). If the tune makes the engine produce higher torque across the RPM range, then there will be more vibration overall, not just in 4WD.
