I've got a '97 Explorer 4.0L SOHC. The "4wd" and "4wd Low" dash indicator lights are illuminating together and flashing on and off.

Does anyone know what this could mean? There's absolutely no reference to this sympton anywhere that I can find.

The flashing 4x4 & 4low light indicate you have a problem with your 4x4 system. I have been told that it can sometimes get out of wack, and does not know witch posistion it is in. Try disconnecting your battery for 5min and this should rest the system. If this does not work your 4x4 shif motor on transfer case could need be looked at, there are several posts on how to repair it. Do a search on 4x4 flashing or transfer case.

Thanks - I'll give that a go...

Cheers

I have had this happen to me before I put the AtlasII in, Note, you will notice that when the lights start blinking, you can pull over and try to switch the 4wd selector to 4wd or 4Lo and nothing happens. You have to turn off the engine turn it back on and without moving the vehicle, turn the selector switch to the 4wd position, then to 4LO and it will work again. You can hear it switching. Go back to auto and your good to go. The computer gets confused and doesn't know where it is. Turning your truck off and back on puts it in a reset condition and changing the 4wd switch to each position just makes sure that the T-case motor moves everything physically through the entire cycle.

Oh and Welcome to the site.
