This morning i went to work in 4WD due to snow and ice. When I got to work I turned it off and reversed for a few feet to disengage the hubs. I had to leave to get a part and put it back in 4x4. Again, when i returned to work I turned off 4x4 and rolled backwards. When i leave work, I push the button and nothing happened. Pushed several times, cycling the engine on an off just to make sure. I went ahead and drove home in 2WD with a 10' trailer in tow. Not as easy as with 4x4.
Got home and fiddled with it some more. Tapped it with a hammer several times, disconnected the switch a couple times. I did not check the control unit because there is stuff back there and it is cold and dark.

The only thing that changed from the time I turned it off the last time to when leaving work, is i pulled it in and put it on the rack to check the tranny fluid and t-case fluid. I added about a 1/4 quart to the t-case.
I can't under stand how it could work perfectly all day until I need it most. I have to haul this trailer all over town tomorrow. I need my 4WD.
I have searched, I came up with nothing except to rebuild the shift motor. i can't take it apart right now, and I will have a very hard time fitting that into my schedule tomorrow.
Could it be something easy just this once?

There are wires on the side of the trans and transfer case. Make sure you didn't knock one loose. I'd remove/reinstall them.

There is a thread on here about testing/checking the 4x4 shift conftol module that is on the driver side rear of the cargo area. If your hearing the clicks from it (they aren't loud clicks) then all that is really left is the shift motor.

You were right. I pulled my shift motor and there was nothing left of the stop bumper.
a few pieces that was the size of rock salt. It's funny how it can work flawlessly all this time, and poof, it stops.
Replaced with 1/4" fuel line and reinstalled. It went right to 4x4 and 4x4 low. But it will not disengage. Tried several times, cycled the key off and on, Stays in 4x4.
What now? can't find anything in search for this.

u mite have to take the shift motor off and turn it back manually. thats what i had to do. turns out hitting it with a hammer can shatter the magnets in the motor. (thats what happened to me)
