4x4

Hello I have a 1997 Explorer with 4x4 and I was wondering if its working or not? When I hit the switch to put it on high the light comes on the cluster 4wd but it makes a lot of noise when driving is that normal when 4x4 high is on? this is my 1st vehicle with 4x4 thats why

no not normal well at least mine does not make sounds,... maybe the motor is screwed or the hubs are they manual or automatic hubs?

97's do not have hubs like the 1st gens do, they have drive splines. Is the 97 awd or 4x4? What is the noise, clunk, pop, click? If you're using 4x4 on dry pavement it's probably the drivline binding then unloading (BAD), don't do that.
