Couple of quick questions concerning gas milage and what can be done to increase it, if at all.
Getting ready to crosscountry in my wifes 99 5.0 Mounty, Did all basics, tune-up oil, change, Tranny flush and filter Monday. Will cleaning the IAC help milage at all? Did the search and the only thing I could find was cleaning eliminated whining noise, And the MAF sensor, better milage if cleaned? Any other thing you folks could help me with as far as preparing my truck for a 4,000 mile (hopefully trouble free) trip? Truck gets about 20 MPG in town as of present, has 87,000 on the odometer

Thanks in advance

No one has any advice?

Thanks..

Well, 40 minutes isn't a long time....

Cleaning the IAC won't help, the MAS might.

However, you're already getting really good mileage with that truck. Dunno how much more you can squeeze out of it.

Do a search for 'Attn: All 5.0 owners' and get depressed.

if you are getting 20 in town then dont touch a thing. i usually get about 15 in town and 20-21 on trips. this is with stock height tire, 3:73's, and about 75 mph.

Damn! 20mpg in town! Are you sure you don't have an Escape?

My 5.0L gets about 12-13mpg in town and 18mph on the freeway. But, it is an AWD model.

lets just say that with my explorer with the 5.0 and awd, I have MAC exhaust, and I get about 250 miles to a tank of gas highway..it sucks...thats about 13 miles to the gallon...theres something wrong..

Nature of the beast. The combo of a V8 and all wheel drive add up to not so high of mileage. The parasitic drag from the AWD is the main culprit. I have looked for a part time kit for my AWD with no luck. I have seen V6 japanese vehicles with part time 4WD get the same mileage, so just get out there and blow them into the weeds. I try to see it this way, thats the price you pay for wicked power and traction.

I think it's the Playstation 2 that gives you bad gas mileage. :D
Just Joking.

Yeah, that's not the best gas mileage.

As for that. There is the possibility of changing to the 98-99 Ranger PVH spindle and hubs and if you don't want the pain of hooking up a vacuum control system you can get manual locking hubs from a company in Brazil.
