Not to discriminate against the 4.0 guys, but I'm interested in hearing what you 5.0 guys have done or plan to do to your trucks. I'll start:

Dead Link Removed
I have a 96 2-wheel drive, with a stock 5.0 motor. It came with the 3.73 limited slip rear end. I've added a K&N filter.

Immediate mods include: cold air induction, dual exhaust & headers (not sure what type yet), lowering kit, Cobra R rims, edelbrock shocks, Baumann Eng. shift kit, SVT badges, and removal of excess baggage on the truck.

Long term mods may include a cam swap, sway bars, throttle body, mass air.

Who else?

Give me a week or so...

Right now my 94 XLT is a 0.0, The new 5.0 should be here next week. It has .30 bore, RV cam for torque, Forgot the head type maybe EX? They were geared more towards flow on the lower RPM's Above 5K they are not very good but with my cam I should see lot's of low end grunt. ARP rod bolts and the other usual stuff. Dyno tuneing with a custom program. Don't forget the custom built AOD tranny.

But for now....Nothing but a huge empty space where my motor should be.....

Everything I've done so far is listed in my signature. Future mods include...Either Flowmaster muffler with custom dual exhaust(already have the muffler in the box)unless I can get a good deal on Borla, and a Superchip. I really don't have a lot of money to do perfomance work so if you guys have any suggestions on inexpensive mods that will keep me from getting blown by a 245hp Pathfinder, Please let me know. Also I have started using 93/94 octane mixing it with 108 octane boost(bought at pep boys).

Nothing special..........

I have a K&N and Borla cat-back exhaust.

Actually you don't have to worry about these 245 HP Pathfinders. On a stop light race, your torque advantage should be able to help you pull out quicker than the Pathfinder.

Also I have started using 93/94 octane mixing it with 108 octane boost

Isn't that unhealthy to your engine? I have tried using 93 octane and I didn't notice any performance gain.

It feels a little quicker off the line. When I finally get a superchip, I will have to run high octane anyway. Even found a Ford Racing dealer that can get me the Borla exhaust for $250. I will get that in the very near future. So if anyone is interested in a Flowmaster 50's series Muffler made for the explorer, I will sell it for a hundred.

Borla exhaust

hey norman,
what ford dealer did you find that will sell the borla exhaust that cheap? i have never seen it for that cheap and i would like to know where i can get it. thanks

I forgot what dealer it was because I didn't have the money yet. But, the price is that low if you order through a Ford Motorsprt dealer that can get their hands on one. Go to Fordracing.com and look up the dealer list. Then its a matter of calling or emailing each one to see if they can get it. Tell them that you saw it on the Ford racing website a few months ago and you wanted to know if it's still availible at that price. Part# M-5200-FC @ 250.00 (Borla Cat-Back Exhaust for the 4dr 5.0 Explorer). I will have do the search again to see who can get it and then order it within the next few weeks.

Here's my 98 XLT. I've split my mods between performance, and appearance. I have a K&N drop-in with a drilled airbox, Jacobs wires, and Bosch +4 plugs. My Flowmaster gets put on tomorrow, and hopefully the Superchip will be here by the end of the month.

I don't have a picture but my mods are in my signature.

Hey, Andrew:

What's the report on the Baumann shift kit? Inquiring minds want to know!

Thanks,

Pete

shift kit

the baumann kit is fantastic!

I set mine up to shift at a level 4 firmness. The 1-2 shist is a little harsh if you are at 1/2 throttle or more. At less than 1/2 throttle, it still shifts smoothly. At WOT, it hits the 1-2 shift with authority. if I didn't have AWD, it would probably chirp the tires.

The 2-3 shift is firm, but unobtrusive.

The 3-4 shift is factory smooth.

For a naturally aspirated engine, I wouldn't setup the shift kit at level 4, but since I am spraying nitrous, I thought it was a better idea.

At level 4, it takes a little learning of how to manange the throttle to make it shift smoothly on the 1-2 while cruising. Now, I have it down, and none of my passengers have ever complained about the shifts (that includes my year and a half old son).

The instructions are one of the best features of the baumann kit. They wrote the instructions for people who have no transmission experience at all. They explain every step. They tell you what every modification does to the tranny and shifting patterns. You never get the "what the hell do they want me to do" feeling, or the "I wonder why they ant me to enlarge this hole in my separator plate" feeling. You always know what each spring or enlarged hole is gonna do.

They also give you choices in the instructions/installation. You have choices for the shift firmness and downshifting.

we had one question about part of the installation; I called themup, and a tech guy immediately answered my question.

If you are looking for a shift kit, look no further. he baumann kitis great.

whatever you do, do not buy the transgo kit. I had one in my 94 mustang gt. We folowed the instruction step by step (exactly the way they wanted it done) and it f***ed up my valve body. If you punched the mustang from a dead stop the tranny would go into neutral. I have seen others with the transgo kit; they said they had the same problems.

I think the web site for the baumann kit is:
http://www.baumannengineering.com

I bought the shift kit and the sonnex valve. I only paid around $100 for both.

check it out,

Andrew

Andrew:

Thanks for the feedback. The tranny in stock form is pathetic. It's great to hear there's a shift kit that really works. I'll snag one next week.

Pete

Andrew:

I was wondering about that shift kit...
do you have to remover the tranny for install?
and how do you set the setting- i see that some companys have a remote box in the cab to adjust it or is it all manual- you have to set it in the tranny itself?

thanks

pur pony,

no, you don't have to remove the tranny.

you only have to remove the valve body, and the tranny oil pan.

the different levels of shift firmnes are selected by using different springs (included with the kit) and also increasing oriface sizes in the separator plates ( all drill bits are inlcuded also)

BTW, how to you like the e303 cam. did you manage to raise your rev limiter?

I'm looking at getting the airflow research heads, custom cam, and edelbrock efi intake. When I get these, I will need to raise the rev limiter to at least 6000 or 6200 rpm.

QUADCAM:

I love the E-303... nice sounding.. not as nice as the B-303 but the E is more for auto and blower applications.
as for the rev limiter. I have not messed with that yet.
I have to do something though- I would also like it to be around 6000-6200... its at 5600 or 5800 if I remember correctly.
