The explorers been losing coolant slowly for about a year now. While changing plugs I notited the head and block was tinted green on the pass side by cylinder #2/3. It appeared as though the head or block had become pourous or something....quite scary as I like the truck. With the inner fender flap removed, I soaped and power washed the side of the motor, then using compressed air I dried it off to find the leak. I was hoping it wasn't a cracked head or bad gasket. Once cleaned and dried I started it up and watched in there with a flashlight and to my amazement, it was leaking up through a head bolt.
I pulled the pass side exhaust manifold off today to do the exhaust leak, and while it was apart, my mechanic recommended that we check this leaky bolt out. We carefully removed it, cleaned it, applied some thread sealer to the threads of the bolt and re-installed it to 55 ft/lbs. No more coolant leak!
I had to hold my finger over the hole to prevent coolant loss while the mechanic cleaned and applied the sealer.
