Hi all, first post.

I've just put a deposit down on a 1999 Sport model with the 5 speed manual. In the Explorer FAQ here it warns of a situation where it is hard to shift into first and that it is due to the clutch slave cylinder not engaging the clutch fully. Supposedly this requires that the transmission be removed  to fix the problem. I'm afraid I had that problem a couple of times on the test drive but didn't think much about it at the time. Anyone had any experience with this problem and can tell me alternative things it might be or how much this might cost to fix?

Thanks!

Bleeding the system could possibly fix it. How many miles are on it? Yes, you do have to drop the trans to replace the slave. It's labor intensive, but not complicated. I did mine, and I'm no mechanic! ;)

Thanks for the reply. Its got 90K. I talked with a guy that's worked on them and he said its about a $400 job if you don't replace the clutch while you're in there but its a good time do that while you're at it. He also said if it was the Tremec trans it shouldn't have the problem, only if its the other (mazda?) trans. Does anyone know for sure which 5 speed manual is in a 1999 Explorer Sport?

Yeah....it's the Mazda one. Just about every explorer with a manual trans came with that one.
