Hello there new member here, I have a question regaurding swapping a 5 speed into an 01 sport trac 4.0.
I came across a good deal on an 01 ST, with a bad automatic trans, that comes with a 2nd gen explorer sport with a good 5 speed in it. My question is how would I know what computer to get? I looked on car-part.com and there is about 15 different options for a manual trans ecu... any advise would be great. Thanks!

In the 1990s Ford EEC-IV EFI system, different ECUs were listed for automatics and manuals. I used the automatic ECU for several manual EFI conversions, and could tell absolutely no driveability differences. Going the other way around might have been different. I did detect the tendency for a slight up-speed in engine rpms immediately on releasing the clutch to shift gears, but only a hundred or so rpms, which then immediately dropped. So there were obviously slightly differing "tweaks" in the ECU programming.

Now later, a different story. The automatics use electronic shifting. Therefore an automatic ECU running a manual transmission will likely throw codes as it "looks" for inputs controlling shifting which aren't there. Those inputs originate partly in the transmission, partly outside, such as engine speed, load, throttle position, mass air flow, etc. Why there would be 15 options for manual shift transmissions, I can only guess: some other factor is involved, perhaps type of ABS, model of vehicle, etc. imp
