I have a 1994 Exporer Sport with a blown 5 speed trans., and a 1992 4 dr. for parts with a good auto trans. My question is: what would have to be done to convert the 94 from manual to automatic? (Both are 4X4's). Is this coversion worth the effort?

I'm trying to go the other way. You should keep the manual tranny. Cheaper to fix.

Just picked a 1992 tonight with 200k and a blown head gasket (or cracked head). Given the high mileage - I plan on just breaking it for parts. The auto trans. has been rebuilt and is in good shape. My 94 Sport now has a blown 5 speed, and cannot seem to find a trans. for it. That is, a trans that won't cost me a lung. Was just wondering what has to be changed with regard to the electronics to make the auto work in a Explorer that was born with a 5 speed. I obviously have all of the parts. Just wondering what will be needed to make the switch?

BTW, I live in the greater NYC area and an automatic is definately the way to go, around here anyway.

Well, you will need the computer and all the wiring for sure. Basically everything that is hooked up to the tranny, you will need. Make sure that you take out the shifter from the doner and the gauges as that is where the P R N D D 2 1 are at. You'll want to know which direction you are going. It should be fairly straight forward. Just look over the donor real well and take pictures and make as many notes and drawings as you can as this will make the swap much easier. And when you are done, you can send your 5 speed to me. I will rebuild it and put it on my rig!!
make sure you send me all the linkages and stuff. he he.

Hope it works out well.

Talk to 410Fortune too, cause he did the same thing.

Later,

Andy

Turns out the trans. fluid was more brown than red, so I've decided not to make the conversion. My first Explorer trans. fluid looked the same way when the trans. gave out. Would hate to make the switch only to have the trans. fail in the near future.
