Is there an easy way to identify whether an '03 Ranger has a 5R44e versus a 5R55E? They were both installed in the Ranger that model year, and they both have the same transmission code on the door sticker... What's the difference, and how can one tell?

Thanks!

There will be a metal tag on the tcase with the info stamped on it.

But do they both use the same shift solenoid

But do they both use the same shift solenoid
So im having an issue with shifting ftom 3rd to fourth. The od off light is flashing and i have to hit the od button to turn of od. But tranny stays in 3rd. I have been able to trick the tranny by useing the 2nd gear by
running Up the rpm in 2nd to 4k and then letting off gas and shifting it into drive. And keeping it above 60mph. This lets tranny skip 4th and go into 5th. I have had the codes pulled and it says 4th gear shift solenoid but i had a ford mechanic tell me ther is no 4th gear solenoid and machical internal clutch shifts 4th.if the solenoids are all the same in the 2 different trannys then i can just get a 6 piece set of them and not have to worry about changing the wrong solenoid.does this sound right

If this link is correct the valves are the same.

Regardless of the codes, the past shows that there are many other issues with the valve body,
like internal wiring, valvebody seals, internal stuck valves, broken valve braket and so on.
Blinking OD is always a pressure related problem, sometimes a remanufactured Sonnax valve body could fix
problems, but this is no guarantee if bands/clutches/servo pistons are worn out.

When i got the truck it had recently had thevtranny rebuilt. I did drop the pan and inspect wireing its all good. What do u think about this internal mechanicl clutch thangy this for mechanic was talking about. Does it control the shifting of 4th gear??

Maybe the mechanic said that no solenoid is activated in 4th gear?
I am not so firm with this electronical controlled tranny,
but looking on this chart the SS1-4 solenoid are responseable for the gears.

So u think since i can trick the trany into working at higher speeds( no less than 60mph)that it could be the shift solenoid. And the only thing i cant find a chart on is the exact postion of 4th gear shift solenoid, thats why i wan just all 6 . Tranny isnt that old and i dont drive it very hard

My opinion is to measure (ohm) the solenoids first, so you identify the one which is out of specs.

But changing maybe only one solenoid is not a guarantee to fix your problem, in most cases the lost of pressure inside the valve body
is the main problem. For someone who has not the experience with this 5R55E/44E valve body, the best option is to use a Sonnax vb.

Reading the attachment for trouble shooting, so you can imagine how complex this thing is.

Thank u .i feel that a couple of solenoid wer loose than others i might check the orings on them.

Also check the braket that holds the solenoids, look for a blown valve body gasket,
check the valve body bolts and tighten them on 13NM/ inch pounds 115.059695 lb-in beginning in the centre, go in circle
outside. Open the reverse plate with the four bolts an have a look on the pistons rod, the contact point to the reverse band
could damage the top of the rod. Reverse piston o-rings might be worn, use a new reverse plate seal.
New oil pan gasket (fiber or kork), filter with new o-rings and MerconV.

And i can do all this from underneath correct

The tranny is fairly new and the valve body too?
After this small amount of miles the tranny should not have those problems!
All this work can do without pulling tranny.
If the valve body gasket is blown you must pull the valve body.
If you intend to pull the valve body be adviced cause the bolts have different length
like in this chart.
The numbers in circlets is the torque sequence, beginning with number 1, 2 and so on.
