I have a V6OHV 1998 XLT 4x4 with a 5R55E tranny.
This car is new to me and has several vexing problems linked to its former law enforcement life.

The vehicle will not back up till the engine is reved to 1800 rpm. It trys to move...but wont hook up till 1800..growls and shudders when it does. In forward it works ok untill you press it a bit..shudders then and shifts smoothly until it goes from third to fourth gear.. it revs a little then grabs..OD is fine as well. It skips on the way down in the same place.

The fluid is a little dark..but not to bad. The level is just a bit high but only about 1/8" high.

What am I looking at here?? valve body issues, ECM issues?? I have an OBD reader.. nothing else save some pressure guages and hoses.. and... I'm on a mountain top in the middle of the Caribbean sea.. HELP!!

Thank You

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the transmission section. How many miles does it have? You could rebuild the valve body first, but if it has very high mileage, then it might need to be rebuilt.

Thank You for the very quick reply.

The mileage is 43,000. I looked at the pan and it seems that it has never been removed.. I am trying to figure out how to get to the transmission section... I'll probably get there by accident !!

Thanks so much for the help!!.. WOW that was fast..

Well.. The next question is.. Who can help me get the Torsion bars adjusted to get this girl back on her feet and quit kneeling??? This old girl has been put to the test on some rough stuff... What is involved and what is the cost?? I cant wait to try fixing this stuff... heck the last vehicle that was in the family that I knew had torsion bars was my Dad's 1957 Chrysler New Yorker... : - /

Good Day.
I got a rebuilt valve body from Central Valve Bodies. I have no insight as to what is ahead of me now... I asked Donny for some instructions as to how to get the bogus one out and the new one in. He sent me some instructions... that include... a reverse piston cap thingie that has to come off but the piston and a rod above it HAS to stay in and if it falls out there seems to be dial indicator setting and all sorts of stuff. I looked all over for a start to finish set of instructions for this project. I saw none. Did I miss it?? I hope there is one, but if not can you please advise me of what I need to look out for so I wont be walking come Monday morning??

Thank You
