2000 Explorer Sport
New member here, been reading off and on for a couple years. I recently bought a 2000 Explorer Sport 2D 4wd 4.0 OHV with the 5r55e transmission. The guy I bought it from said he had the transmission completely rebuilt and replaced the torque converter. Lasted a few months and had to pull it out again and take it back to the guy who rebuilt it. After he reinstalled it the second time, lasted a few more months and went out again. The transmission is not completely out, when I bought it, I drove it on the trailer and hauled it home. Not familiar with these transmissions. I pulled the valve body out, it had no upper VB gasket. Are these transmissions supposed to have a upper and lower VB gaskets ?

Yes, they have a gasket on both sides of the separator plate. There's an updated separator plate available that has bonded gaskets, that helps to prevent gasket failures.

There's lots of info on these in the transmission section of this forum.
