All you 5R55E Guru's,
recently installed temp guage and filter, noticed pulling small trailer through mountains, that temp would hold at 160 to 180 untill it kicked down to 2nd gear, within 20 seconds the temp would climb to 220- 230. does this indicate excessive slippage, and further problems? also noticed no, or little engine braking in reverse.
this is stock 97 xlt (except TT, aal, shackle and 31" tires) with 90k miles, untouched trans.

I'm a newbie so don't flame me if this is posted, in wrong place

I'm not a guru, but I can tell you that my tranny pulling a load up a large hill and 85 to 90 degrees ambient, it didn't go over 190, that reading is on the hottest line (from the tranny to the radiator). As soon as I kick it down to pull hard, my temp shoots right up to the 190 range, so I would say that if you only have one cooler 230 on a hot day would not be out of the question.

I would highly recommend that you change out the fluid for full synth, get an external cooler, and filter, and do the valve body upgrades, it is well worth the price. I couldnt believe the difference in shifts and how much better it tows. Oh also don't forget to adjust your bands to make sure they are tight and not slipping.

Does your fluid smell burnt?

my specs...
2001 mounty 110K, 5r55e, 2 external coolers, Shift kit, VB upgrades, Full Synth ATF.

Oh and welcome to the board, take a look at the 5r55e thread in the stickies, it is full of great info!!

Thanks, I will have a closer look at the sticky, seems I may have some of the symtoms of the tech bulletin, appreciate response.

Trans I should be able to fix, now I need to find an op manual on how to work this forum, or web chat or what ever they call it

Welcome to this forum! Did you mount the sensor inside of the pan or on one of the external cooler lines?

sorry I should have elaborated, the sender is on outlet line before top rad inlet
(hot) has no afterarket cooler,

regards,
