90 aerostar/98 explorer
Hello, new to the forum and it is fantastic!! I just bought another aerostar van. This one is a 97 w/ a 5r55e trans..
I havn't taken the pan off just yet but it is slipping in all gears so am anticipating a rebuild. I ordered the ATSG manuel and have been looking for rotunda tools to do the job.
My question is which tool kit do I Reallyneed to get the job done? seems there are several tool sets for the 5r trans. The kit number would be really helpful.
I may try to write this rebuild up depending on what I find when I get into it.
Thanks in advance, Dave

Welcome to this forum! How many Aerostar vans do you have? Before you rebuild the whole transmission, what symptoms does it have? Sometimes it could be related to the valve body. Some tools are necessary such as the front pump alignment tool if you plan on opening up the pump. Other tools are nice to have, but there are ways around them, such as the shaft seal for the shift linkage. A deep socket could be used to tap the seal into place instead of the special tool that they sell. Check the Aerostar section on this site. It has a lot of information on the Aerostar van.

Thanks Brooklyn, I now have 2 vans my original is a 90 that we have had 8 years. I have had the trans rebuilt twice (first time the tranny place i took it to really screwed it up) took it somewhere else and they got it right. I dropped it both times in my driveway as i had no garage at the time. I also have swapped out the engine once.
The van i just bought from a gal for 350.00. She had taken it to a mechanic as it was not able to pass state emissions. He scanned the computer and got the emissions end worked out but he said it showed 2 trans codes as well. He drove it to the emissions test station and on the return trip, he said the trans started slipping in all the forward gears. said the fluid was definately burned as well. I have not gotten it home yet but thought that when I did I would give the trans a go as I don't need it as a driver just yet.
Any thoughts on this? I will scan computer when I get it home but like I said it will need some parts for sure
Thanks, Dave

unfortunately I don't know and he couldn't remember but I will scan the computer when I get it home and post back

trans codes

well, I finally was able to get the van home and do a scan on the computer and here's the list
P 1783 trans overtemp condition
p 0733 gear3 incorrect ratio
p 0734 gear4 incorrect ratio
p 1762 overdrive band failed off
p 1744 tcc system perform
p1780 trans control switch out of range
more than I expected but still appears most of this is valve body related to the initial failure. I am anticipating clutch packs and bands and a valve body rebuild but maybe not too many hard parts, am i correct in this or does anyone have any additional thoughts on this?
thanks, Dave

Ok, I'll start there. Thanks, Dave

Well, I've finally gotten the trans out of the van. Was full of metal as I was suspecting by the looks of the fluid on the dip stick. Tore into it with the ATSG manuel and got all the parts out on the bench. Needed several hard parts replaced in addition to the clutch packs. The clutches were completely gone in the forward clutch. I was able to find used hard parts on e-bay so did well there. I also got a valve body and torque converter on e-bay as well. The only tools that I bought to do the job was a clutch spring compresser, the pump alignment tool and a inch pound torque wrench that I did not have. I put it all back together and re-installed it last weekend and it drives!!! so I guess I did ok for a first time auto trans rebuild. I think I'm into this project about about $700 vs. a $1700 shop job so it was well worth it. while I was waiting for parts I read lots of the posts on the forum and there were several tidbits that came in useful during the project including putting in a drain plug in the pan :thumbsup:best $10.00 ever spent I think.
I'm still having a issue with the computer, when I do a KOEO or KOER scan, the scanner will say that the OBD II check was incomplete, however I can view all the parameters for all the available PID's so I'm not sure waht to make of that. Have checked all the harness wiring and did not find any problems there. I even got a hold of a used ECM and tried that as well with the same result. Anyone have any ideas on this one or come across this before? Thanks for the forum guys, It ROCKS Dave

I didn't get any codes however the KOEO check will not complete and when I run the KOER I get a P1000 but it says that the OBD II check is incomplete. I havn't seen that before. Also while looking at the trans PIDS it says that there is a fault in shift sol 1 2 and 3 however the trans shifts good so that has me a little stumped. Dave
