02 Explorer Sport
I have an early production model Explorer Sport (door tag says 02/02), took truck to my local garage to have trans fluid changed and was told need special adapter for pan. My question is I thought this was only for the sealed transmissions with no dipstick. Truck has just rolled over 60K miles and dont think this proceedure has ever been done (bought used). Also wondering if Ford dealer uses "flush" machine or other proceedure.

Thanks to all from a new guy here.

Thank you very much BB for your reply, i KNEW I had read here somewhere that my trans didn't require that adapter. Guess my mechanic just din't feel like doing the job, although he said he called the local dealer. makes me wonder if I should even go THERE for transmission service. Will surely keep a watch out for all posts / replys from you overall and thanks again.

You could do it yourself. You disconnect the pan bolts, drain out the fluid, replace the filter with new O ring seals, check valve body gaskets to see what kind of condition they're in, check the torque of the valve body bolts, check the solenoid bracket for cracks, clean the magnet in the pan, replace the pan gasket (don't use any sealant on the Permaseal gaskets), and reinstall the pan. Don't over torque the pan bolts. They strip easily. Use Mercon V fluid. Add it while the engine is running. I'm sure that the shops only open the cooler line, and drain the fluid without replacing the internal filter. Forget about them doing anything extra like checking bolts or gaskets.

Now by dropping the pan on this trans is it still true that only about 1/3 of total fluid will drain out. Will definetly be doing filter change when I do this.

Would you happen to know a good site to find part #s for filter, pan gasket etc. thanks very much....again
