I have read many symptoms on problems with the 5R55W but not quite exactly what mine is doing.Start it, put in gear, may be perfect. Would not know there is a problem. Or put it in gear and rev up any gear.Put it in park, shut it off, start it up and go right in gear as if nothing ever happened.Drive a couple miles then coast going down long curvy hill, give a little throttle when ready after the coast and it may rev up not pulling or it may do just perfect. You never know when its going to happen but seems to be after coasting.Drove another 4 miles into town, perfect. Got into town and coasted slowly slowing down for reduced speed limit went to throttle, quit pulling, rev up. Throttled several times, nothing, just rev. pulled over, put in park , shut it off, start right back up , put in gear and go like nothing ever happened . Only one time threw a code 1700 I think it was. Changed filter, half dozen quarts fluid and new drain plug while in town.Drove 6 miles home and tried many many times to get it to act up by coasting. Never missed a beat. Perfect. I thought ok, I'm onto something here. Went out next day, started, put in gear, revs up.Really? Drove 6 miles to town , quit pulling after a coast one time, rev up and started pulling again. Had trans flushed thinking still dirty oil needs all cleaned. Seem to maybe be a little worse as in quits pulling little more often but seems to be at slower speeds. At any given time shut it off , start right back up , put in gear and go like hell like nothing ever was wrong.NO CODES. Anyone have any ideas. 1st thought for me was servos ,then realize it must be electrical so then I'm thinking solenoid pack. I can not afford to throw parts at it. Not a problem buying what is needed just affraid of wasting money getting wrong part.

It is eighter your valve body (clogged) (more likely) or the solenoid pack.

Ford DTC Decoded: P1700
What's Wrong: This is a generic code that means input versus output is being delayed on the transmission. Common Causes of This Issue: When this code is the only issue, trouble code, or symptom, it is almost always indicative of debris in the transmission.

The Servo fix corrected my slow engagement on my 02. Was slow for years but when I recently had only 1st and 4th gear along with no overdrive I replaced the servos with the o ring shaft. Ran about 200 miles until it fixed it. Then all gears were back and it goes right into reverse or drive right away on first start of the day.

These units have a high failure rate on the flow control valve. About the only way to diagnose is to put a pressure gauge on transmission and to monitor line pressure. The valve is located inside the pump which requires transmission removal and disassembly.

What do you think about solenoids? They also control pressure for multiple purposes. I read somewhere how to test the solenoids but can not find it again. Thanks to all for the input. Will dig a little more.

Very well could be solenoid pack. When you do the resistance check remember they may check good electrically but still not function mechanically. Here are some diagrams that may help. Trans temp sensor will not play a part in the testing.

Awsome . Thank you. Will perform these tests and go from there. If it is a solenoid, I suspect it is sticking and needing cleaned but ohm test needs done as well. Thanks again for info..
