2001 Explorer Sport
Hello,
I own a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport 4x4 2 door. It is the loaded version, with the 6 disc cd changer model #1L2F-18C815-LA. What am I going to need to do to the wiring and factory unit in order to use an external amplifier that will be powering 2 10" subs in a bandpass box, in the cargo area of my vehicle?

1) Does it have outputs?
2) If it doesn't have outputs, what do I use instead, if anything?
3) Is there much if any extra wiring that will have to be done for this?

Any help would be great.

I don't think so. Generally you would have wire outputs going directly to the 4 speakers. No RCA output connectors

2) If it doesn't have outputs, what do I use instead, if anything

Split the outputs going to the rear channel (rear speakers) and feed that to the subs amp. Depending on your amp, you may need to get an LOC (line out converter) to convert the signal to something acceptable to the amp to prevent clipping. Oh and make sure you get the right filters (some are built in into the LOC, others are built into the amp). You need to make sure that the amp gets fed only the low frequencies

3) Is there much if any extra wiring that will have to be done for this?

Not too much. The LOC's are little boxes that splice into the existing line. Then you just have to run the RCA from the LOC to the amp itself. Normal wiring for the amp and that should be it

While the steps above are the easiest (but not necessarily the best) way to accomplish what you need. There are other methods that can be used

Good luck !

thanks

could you split the line that goes to the rear factory sub and run that to an aftermarket sub/amp combo?

I believe you can but I would suggest not hooking them up together and running them together.

Any (good quality) aftermarket sub+amp combination would produce noticeably more bass compared to the factory sub and amp, you would basically be cancelling the effect or output of the original sub. It won't really add to the bass (mixing different subs / different enclosures) does not always yield favorable results.

But don't take my word for it. You can always experiment and see the results for yourself - it is after all, your truck.

good luck

agree, it's a bad idea to mix subs, especially when youre pushing serious watts. also, it's not worth the effort because the stock sub has its own amp and it is not that great of a sub. last, the way its wierd is funky, youd have to make a new harness. just snip the wires and get about $90 for it on ebay :)

sorry i should have worded that differently. I ment disconnecting and NOT using the factory sub, but just using the wiring that goes all the way back for the aftermarket setup.

Ah, well in that case... i would change wiring. once you bypass the head unit, the stock sub wires are rendered useless. its very easy to run new wires. now, if you keep your head unit, you should only use the signal feed, but wire your own gound and power. mainly depends on your wattage, if youre keeping the stock deck, and if your bypassing it or not. Hope this helps! and please ask if you have further questions, ive replaced my speakers, deck, cd changer, and new subs all myself so i might be able to help
