I just got my 04 expolorer back from the dealer...they said the truck had a "completely dead" #6 cylinder"..the truck starts..idles very rough..but I was able to drive it the 2 miles to the shop..if it were dead..would I be able to drive it that far?..the engine actually ran alot smoother when i went about 35-45 mph. I replaced the upper intake gaskets...plugs and wires..but no change..It was suggested a second opinion?..what should I try next?..at only 84k I dont think it should of gave up its ghost so soon..thanks in advance!

Im having the same issue with my 04. Here is a link to my thread.

You can have any shop do an OBD scan and see what codes the truck is throwing out. A dead cylinder has it's own code....so compare this to what the dealership is saying. Although, Ford probably isn't lying to you....if that's what you're implying.

The questions you asked here are probably the same ones you could have asked the service manager or tech at the dealership (ie "if it were a dead cylinder, how could I have driven it here" and "it runs smooth at 35-45MPH....why not rough")

Thankyou for writing back....yes, I did ask those questions and all I got was a shoulder shrug!!!..Thinking about it now i guess it is very possible to drive it on 5 cylinders..the momentum of the crank probably helped move the dead slug along at higher speed..explaining the smoother ride to the shop?
anyway I wasnt implying they were lieing at all..but as you said..they "probably" werent..and when your talking about $1,500 worth of work, probably just isnt gonna cut it....I just dont understand how after only
84K, I could need a tear down..(oil/fluids regularly changed..)..
