Well----it's fixed---I hope. The poor guy was so mad he could barely talk. They screwed with that snap ring for almost 4 hours. There was maybe 2 inches to work in and was a ***** of a job. He wanted 150------what he stated in the beginning. I eneded up giving him 200 for 4 hours honest work on the truck. After the cap came out it took maybe ten minute to replace the cap and ring.

PS---I stopped at one other tranny place just before taking it back to the guys that did the job----they said the tranny had to be dropped in order to get the cap out. The quoted 350 plus tax.I feel sorry for people who know little about their cars because they must be getting gouged big time in this town.

I'm overstating the case perhaps, but it appears from everything I read and hear that if there is a branch of the automobile repair trade that has more than its share of charlatans and crooks, Auto Transmission Repair is it.

From about twenty years ago, exhaust and transmission work is the highest profit per hour automotive work there is.

I can say yes exhaust is a high profit per hour work BUT, only when it comes to prebent systems. I can bang out prebent stuff all day long even the toughest stuff usualy takes me no more than an hour to do. The flip side of that coin is custom bent exhaust it is time consuming and having been in the buisness as long as I have, I can honestly say there arnt a whole lot of people out there who really know how to custom bend. I pride myself on my ability and have built up a good reputation. and just so yall know doing custom on just about any explorer is a pain in the (insert explitive here). As for transmission work yes there are a ton of shops that will rob you blind. Automatics really arnt that difficult to work on its the manuals that are the big brain buster. unfortunalty the trans shops live on the fact that most folks dont have a clue on how to repair them. so if i may ill plug myself. anyone in the chicago area that needs exhaust or suspention work send me a message and Ill see what I can do for ya.

Not to get off topic but I have to diagree with CDW. I think front end work (brakes, ujoints, struts ect.) and maintance is the highest profit per hour work in the auto industry. I have pulled many trans and installed prebent pipe, I have even bent custom pipes and still think for time spent, front end work is alot eaiser and makes more $$$ than any thing else.

Back on topic, I am glad you got your leak fixed. I know how shops can rip someone off, I have seen it done. Never hurts to get a few quotes and shop around.
