With engine running, just above idle, listen for any vacuum leaks. Look for any cracked hoses especially the small hard plastic coloured lines (if any ?). Next remove and clean the idle air control valve ( if it has one ?) and make sure the spool inside the housing moves back and forth and springs closed. If you have a MAP sensor, make sure the vacuum line to it is not leaking and try rapping it gently with the handle of a screw driver while the engine is running. This can sometimes correct (temporarily) a bad running engine.

IF you still have the original parts and paint, the factory has provided a sticker with the complete vacuum hose diagram for your engine combination either on the underside of the hood or on the radiator support. That will show you where the lines are supposed to go.

Like chbtech said, look carefully at the 1/8" plastic lines (especially) as they are prone to breaking and should be replaced at the first oppertunity anyway.

If you are thinking that you have a vacuum leak from the 'jumble of lines' then you can certainly pull the small lines off of the manifold one at a time and plug the hole left, (temporarily) while the engines running, and see what changes/smooths out the idle. Basically eliminate the leak source one at a time.

MAP stands for "manifold absolute pressure" and to my knowledge is just a reading of engine vacuum that is sent to the computer. The MAP sensor on my 87 is a black plastic box 1/2 the size of a pack of cigarettes. It's mounted on the firewall and has a single hard plastic vac. line running to it and a plug- in of elect. wires running out of it. Why I suggested rapping it is because a common problem on a lot of earlier Fords was the MAP sensor getting clogged up with guck/moisture from the vacuum line.
