Hey guys, I did a search on this but couldnt turn up a whole lot of info about it. I would like to change over to disc brakes on the rear, but I'm not sure what all I will need to change.

First off, I read in another thread that all the 8.8in rear housings have the same outter flanges, which should, in theory, allow brake components from all 8.8's to interchange. I am considering using 95 explorer discs and calipers, but I dont know if the axles are the same length. Meaning the distance from the housing flange to the wheel mounting surface. Can anyone confirm that these brakes will work on my car?

Second, the master cylinder situation, I know that drums require more pressure, but discs often require a higher fluid volume. Can I get away with an adjustable prop. valve to balance the rears, or do I need a disc/disc M/C. Also, my X has ABS, will this be affected in a negative way by going to rear discs.

Also, are 95 explorer rear discs a vented rotor like the fronts, or are they a crappy solid rotor like SN95 mustang rears? If they're solids, does anyone know of a vented rotor setup that will swap?

Is there anything else that I missed that could make this swap go bad? I've done drum to disc conversions on my 66 mustang, so I'm confident in my brake skills.

Thanks in advance,
TJ

Check out the article I wrote about 5 years ago in the tech section. Ford Explorer Disc Brake Installation For 1991 - 1994

I converted my 94 to disc's 5 years ago and have had no problems since. I've since put over 75K miles on the setup. The flanges are the same.

I have not had a problem with the solid rotor. I'm lifted w/ 33's. (Remember this is an explorer, not a mustang).

ABS is not affected.

Use the mc from a 96 explorer w\ disc's and w\o cruise control. I don't have the ford part # in front of me, but they are around $120 at the dealer and around $80 from carquest. You may need to adjust your prop rod for this about 2 turns.

You got my attention with the mustang. Any pics?

Thanks a lot, that link was very helpful. Unfortuately I couldnt find a 95+ X in the yard today, but hopefully sometime next week I can get to another larger yard. I'm sure i'll have more questions about it later. Thanks again.

Sorry, i dont have any pics of the stang on this computer.
