Hi All,

Before I start, beware that I am a very, very, very newbie to engine repair. I'm excited to learn about it, and also under significant budget constraints, which is why I am trying to do this all myself.

1991 Explorer 2WD
Been in storage for 3 years
Was not properly stored (I am sure)

The problem is that it isn't starting.
I have replaced the starter, shimmed the starter, replaced the batter, replaced the starter solenoid. What is happening now is that the truck will crank, but there is not indication that it is attempting to turn over.

My little brother has been trying to help, but he is at the end of his abilities. He has told me that there doesn't appear to be any indication of spark. At this point I am lost as well.

Troubleshooting tips anyone? Where should I start attacking this problem?

Thanks,
Andy

I had a problem like that with my 92, it was the crankcase position sensor. A cheap fix.

He has told me that there doesn't appear to be any indication of spark.
1st thing I would do would be to verify this conditions (is there or is there not spark?). Personally I like to use a timing light to see if the spark plugs are firing.

Then check for fuel (do you hear the fuel pump run? what's the fuel pressure? See Glacier's "fuel pressure test mini diary" in the under the hood forum.)

Pull codes from the computer to see if the computer can see the problem. See my "notes on pulling EEC-IV codes" in the EEC-IV forum.

Then, diagnose depending on what you find from those test.

i am not one to pop anyones growth in knowledge or for knowledge in any area of life. however it sounds from what you have allready replaced and attempted to repair that knowledge is slim. if you are very tight on money, and have the tools, the above mentioned is a good place to start. however i think you had better call a friend that has auto repair skillz or take it to a shop.
