91 ford explorer 4x4 tranny D and OD question

I have a 91 ford explorer 4x4 I cant start driving in overdrive but I can in regular drive, when I get moving to about 30 mph or higher I can shift into over drive and it works fine? Any Ideas on why this is happening? please help!!!

I know, I mean when I take it out of park and into overdrive it dont move but it trys to, its automatic.

Did you check the fluid level? It might be a little low.

fluids are good, no burnt smell, the gear just dont ingage unless i start in regular drive first

It might be a valve body related problem. Check the sticky thread called the A4LD valve body rebuild diary in the transmission section for more information.
