Hello all,
After just buying my 91 Ford Explorer a few months ago I've been running into this strange problem and I'll try my best to explain it.
First off, It's a manual transmission with 4WD. About 70% of the time it shift's gears fine, no issues arise. But, on what seems to be happening more and more recently, my gears are locking up. The clutch pedal becomes less stiffer than it normally is. It feels much lighter to push in, and It's almost damn near impossible to get it out of 1st to neutral and IF i pull that off It won't shift to any other gear. Also, during this moment If I come to a stop, I can't shift to 1st to begin movement, BUT if I turn the vehicle off, I can switch gears just fine, put it in 1st gear and start the car.. and the engine rev's (not too high, very easy rev's) and the vehicle begins to actually move (2-3mph) without me pushing on the gas pedal as I let off the clutch, and If I completely let off the clutch it tries its best to keep going but ultimately stalls. I'm completely stumped on what this could be. Possible transmission failure? Another note to mention is when this DOESN't happen and I'm moving just fine. Gears working properly and what not.. If I got from 3rd to neutral.. and try to go back to 3rd I hear a grinding noise for a few seconds before it actually goes into 3rd and continues movement. I'm no mechanic, and this would be my second vehicle to actually own. I'm looking to learn as much as possible about this, because I do actually love it. Any and all help, tips, or advice would be appreciated.
