Hello from ky
I have a 1991 x XLT 4x4, just bought and drive it home well all most home, after driving 28 miles on the interstate drove good. when i stopped at the light it would not move execpt I had not stopped at the light so any way I had towed home with the misses Jeep. after the motor cooled down I could drive it again, but here is the kicker, with the motor running and in park you can feel the tranny wanting to go forward, even in reverse and netraul it wants to move forward, I have changed the fluid and filter and found a lot of shavings in the pan. I know it needs to be replaced but what would make the tranny want to move forward in all gears. please help if anyone has an idea.

well a couple of items come to mind. First is the linkage. There is a thing we here have been calling the Z link that connects the linkage inside the case (easily viewed with the pan off) to the "manual valve" - (pics available in the A4LD Diary in Useful Threads) This has been known to fall out leaving you at the mercy of whatever position the manual valve happens to take. That is my first guess.

Second guess is that the forward clutch is fried and for all intents "welded together". I think is a more remote possibility, especially given that at the light it would not move at all.

For now check the linkage and the Z link and let us know what you find. I'm confident you will have something to report.

There IS a slightly more sinister possibility, but let's wait to hear what you find.

The Z link has what looks like the passing gear cable and the selctor on it it moves with the selctor on the column, I have park (will not move) but it still feels like it wants to go forward

Ok went and started the beast up, when I placed the gear selector in rev I heard this ractching, grinding noise like it is in the tranny, when I placed it into drive same noise but only for 2 or 3 seconds and it jump into drive jump felt the same as any car. when I placed it into rev. the noise came back and only for 2 or 3 sceonds and back into drive, when I placed it into park the same noise was there again. I know it needs to be replaced but I am just wanting to know. Thanks

OK I just got back from the salvage yard found a 91 bronco with a 5-speed tranny and t-case, with the pedals, it is mated to a 2.9L V-6. How easy will it be to change over, drive shafts mating, bell housing to motor.
I know I will have to cut a hole in the floor. Once again

THANKS
Charles
