I've got a '91 Explorer XLT that came with the "premium" sound system. The tape player's been broken on the HU for two years or so, and the FM-modulated CD adapters don't work very well (and are a major pain in the butt), so i finally decided to replace the darn thing. I got myself a JVC CD player, and decided "oh, i've installed radios before...this should be a piece of cake"

D'OH!

Anyways, i've figured out what i need to do (bypass the amp), but i've been trying to figure out what the non-speaker wires connected to the HU do. I've identified the main ones, but there are a couple i just can't figure out. I would appreciate it if someone could fill in this list:

Red - ???
Blue - ???
Black - Ground
Lt. Blue/Red - Instrument Illumination
Lt. Green - Battery
Yellow/Black - Accessory (Switched)
Orange/Black - ???

I've got everything identified that I need, but I'm a curious fellow. Thanks.

91 Explorer Premium Sound wiring

Here are the wire colors, circuit numbers, and descriptions for the circuits on the "Power" connector:

looking at the wires from top to bottom (keying notch at top) the wires would be

Pin Circuit descrip (color)
#1 54A Battery + (light green/yellow)
#2 57B Lamp grd (black)
#3 137 Ignition + (yellow/black)
#4 19A Lamp + (light blue/red)
#5 484 LCD power (Orange/Black)
#6 694 Amp grd (Red)
#7 747 Power ant (Orange/Light Blue)
#8 689 Amp enable (Dark Blue)

Hope that helps you. You won't need many of these if you are installing an aftermarket radio.

regards,

cobrajeff
