I have a '97 4 door, XLT.

I've noticed when looking at the speaker wire colors in the doors that the ones connected to the HU are not the same color? Is this correct or am I missing something? If so I know all of the colors at the speakers but not going into the HU, does anyone know these?

Thanks.

Do you have premimum sound? In an XLT, you probably do. You probably have an external amp in the rear cargo department. This is where you wires will change color.

Head unit plug colours should be:

light blue/white---left door speaker
orange/light green---left door speaker

dark green/orange---right door speaker
white/light green---right door speaker

tan/yellow---left rear speaker
grey/light blue---left rear speaker

brown/pink---right rear speaker
orange/red---right rear speaker

And yes the colours do change between head and speaker (it's a FORD thing). Hope this helps.

why did ford give the wires for the audio system all these crazy colors? wouldn't having every car they make the audio system wire colors the same make things easier?

Brown (or dark tan)
Yellow / no stripe
Lime Green / no stripe
Purple / White stripe

can anyone help me please. i tried to use a tone generator but could not get any sound at all.

certain explorers, and ford the head unit is not the radio, but controls for the radio, the radio, amplifier is in the rear of the truck,

you just have controls for them upfront.
