Well, looks like the engine in my 91 XLT is going to die soon so I will have to replace it. Wondering what years engines are a direct replacement and what models (navaho?? ranger??) can I use. They are going to charge me between $600-$700 to install it (ouch) but what can ya do ya know. Any help would be great..thanks guys!

not sure of this but i would think any year of ohv would fit

91-94 explorer 4.0l
mazda navajo
early 90s mazda b-series pickup with 4.0
some rangers

I would only use 91-93 year engines, as they added the EGR system in '94. I have a '94 with the EGR, my mom has a '93 with no EGR.

So you know. You might want to check whether or not your engine has it. I don't think it will being that it is a '91, but it does make a difference. I think the computer would be different too.

I plan on finding a COMPLETE engine..computer and all. Curious, are their any hp differences between any of the engines..be nice to buy with a bit more OOMPH!

I believe that all of the OHV engines are rated at 160hp, and I am not sure what the torque rating is. It was my understanding that performance numbers didn't increase until the introduction of the SOHC and V8 engines.

im pretty sure the torque is 210 ftlbs

i deleted your double post.

Actually I put it in 2 places to be able to get more feedback as not everyone looks in all places..but oh well.

Later 4.0 ohv motors had different heads, and there for different compression ratios. Even Vanir tech specifies a year break for heads.
