Go for a newer motor from a mustang. Just transfer intake, etc over. I'm guessing you have a 4.0 sohc motor.

what year mustangs? im looking for a basic plug and play. its a DD.

If I remember correctly up to 05' V6 from the mustang will work. Someone else can jump in if I'm wrong.

Im thinking of you getting a motor with no timing chain issues.
You would be able to just swap accessories, intake, engine wiring harness, maybe exhaust manifolds over to the newer motor.
Then you would have a reasonably fresh motor with no timing cassette issues.

long block only?

If you decide to use a Mustang (2005 thru 2010) SOHC V6 you will only be able to use the long block. Everything else (wiring harness, intake manifolds, all accessories, etc.) must be swapped over from your 1998 Explorer to the Mustang engine. In addition, the Mustang has different fuel injector seals and no crankcase breather. Due to wiring harness changes, sensor changes, fuel changes and intake manifold changes the only "plug & play" engine swap is a 1997 or 1998 Explorer or Mountaineer engine. If you are willing to use just the long block then you can use any Ford SOHC V6 from any Explorer, Mountaineer, Ranger, Mustang or even a Range Rover Discovery III. Several members have gone with the Mustang engine and there is a good thread documenting the swap. All of the camshaft timing change improvements are incorporated in the 2002 and later engines. Some members think the Mustang engines have additional camshaft timing improvements but I doubt it.

so basically, i can use any 4.0 SOHC v6 engine as long as i swap everything over? what advantages are there using a mustang engine over a explorer engine? are timing chain issues common with these things?

im sorry fellers. im not new to forums, and i know over on other forums we get all pissy when new guys ask the same questions over and over. is there a thread that has all the basic info in it?

In my opinion the only advantage of using a Mustang engine is they are newer (2005 and later) and plentiful in salvage yards. If a Mustang engine and an Explorer engine of the same year, mileage, and cost were available I would pick the Explorer.

Engine swap 98 sohc with 05 Mustang motor

There's a good summary in Post #144.

Streetrods bang on. Its the same motor. Just get the best motor possible. The intake, and accessories are easy. Just gaskets and some time.

soch motor

I have a 1997 explorer with 4. liter soch motor can I change motors to something besides soch motor? or would it be better to go with the newer mustang motor that I have been reading about. Did like the power my ex had before the motor stopped
