I'm considering buying a '91 XLT with 180,000 miles. The transmission is newly rebuilt and the engine is still good. Everything works, but the steering is a little sloppy. What else do I need to know before I commit?

You have addressed major issues already. It all depends now what you're gonna do with this truck. Check for recent work on front end - ball joints, u-joints, wheel bearings, radius arm bushings and rather rear suspension had any work done (sagging leaf springs) or not. Fuel filter, fuel pump, injectors, brakes...etc, etc....

I agree with a fresh trany there isnt much else to really worry about an a good clean 1st gen.

Just remember that you're buying a 14 year old truck. So don't be surprised if you're soon doing things like fuel pump, water pump, radiator, etc.

Ok, Thanks. I just found out it has a fuel leak and the brakes need work - probably the rear. The front wheel bearings and heater core have been replaced. I think everything else is pretty much stock.

brakes are no big deal... fuel leak might be... depends on where it's coming from.
