2000 XLT 5.0L AWD
Looking at replacing my 2000 XLT with a 2004 XLT 4.0L and I would like to lift it up 2 to 3 inches and do some other mods. The one I found does not have any of the plastic trim some have, I like the less is more look.

Curious what to look for or to avoid in this model year SUV.
  • Transmision type to avoid? I know these explorers can sometimes come with a couple different model transmissions.
  • 4.0 versus 4.6 (I have the 5.0 in the 2000 I currently own) Is the V6 a durable engine.

I am looking at the quicklift system I found online to lift it.

I have the 4.0, if I were you I'd go with the 4.6 the gas mialage is not much worse and the pickup and power is so much better. But the 6 is nice. (i do belive bigger is better)

I agree i also have the 4.0, it makes good power gets decent power, but youre gonna want a 4.6 when your buddy rolls up with that v8 rumble

Check the tranny. The splendid pack tends to go fast.

Did you mean the Solenoid pack?

I would avoid the quicklift as that seems to not really work. A body lift or lift spacers seems to be best for the job. The only thing I would worry about getting is a warranty incase something does happen, transmission repairs are not cheap.

If you are not a speed freak and don't pass people much, the 4.0 will be fine. But the 4.6 will run stronger and still return similar gas mileage, some members wish they would have gotten the V8 when they had the chance(Caldwell for example:D). I vote V8 if it's in your price range.

:( - sadley what Limited says is true...

other than 4x2 or 4x4, theres 2 gear ratios that can come on the explorer. they are 3.55 gears or 3.73 gears ( towing package )...

the 4.0L is a good strong engine for sure. Ford has been using it in explorers for years obviously. If was in your shoes, since you are a V8 guy already I think you would be let down by the power a 4.0 makes compared to what your used to. I would look around for a 4.6L, simply because MPG ratings are almost identical or better in some cases. Plus the 4.6L make alot better power from the factory. The 4.6L with an Intake, Exhaust, and Tune will make you smile very big lol ( estimate 30 HP/TQ, +/- ). It doesnt take a whole lot to wake this engine up, and be very street friendly at the same time.

simply I think that you would be alot happier with a V8 3rd gen...

also just a thought i just had... for a little more power atleast for the V6 owners. why couldnt ford put in the 4.2L V6 F-150 engine ??? damn ford designers !!!

thanks for the input. The price is right for this explorer $8700 for 2004 with 75K miles, but I am hesitating because of the motor. The wifey of course thinks it is no big deal, but they never understand.

thanks for the input on the quick lift, I was researching it and it does not appear to be what I want I think. Looking to lift one 2 to 3 inches in the suspension.

A little off subject, but what is the story with the launch of the F-100 (replaces the ranger) and possible resurrection of the bronco (which would use the F-100 frame). I heard it was shelved, but thought I would ask. I saw a write up that the new bronco would be styled like the early 70s bronco, with solid axles on the front and back like the jeep. If it going to be a reality, maybe I would try to hold out till then.

BTF spacers are gonna be your best bet for a lift...

i think 2.25'' spacers w/ 265/75 or 70s will get you about 3'' of total lift

def look for a V8 though if you can find one near you...

The Bronco's not going to happen and I'm sure the F-100 won't as well. I haven't heard much about what's going to happen with the Ranger, but as soon as I do, I'll say something. I believe the Sport Trac is dead and Ford will offer a redesigned Ranger available with 4-doors and the 2.0 turbo(and other small motors). If they are smart, they'll offer a lowered street version with 4-doors, AWD and the 3.5 Ecoboost(or the 5.0:D)

Another site that I go to everynow and then is blueovalnews.com. Good site that keeps me up to date on what's happening.
