92 Exploder, 2nd & Reverse Only?

Bought a 92 XLT wilh Auto Today that only has 2nd & reverse gears, Will move fine in those gears, Have spent the last hr searching threads for this problem w/out any luck.

Anyone have a clue where to start looking for possible cure??

You could have a valve body problem, a clogged filter, or cooler, or possibly a bad modulator. Do you have this problem at certain temperatures, or all of the time? If you had a problem with 2nd gear, I would think that it's a governor, or intermediate band problem. Does your cruise control work? Your VSS might not work, and could prevent 4th gear (3-4 shift solenoid engagement).

Brooklyn, Thanks for the responce, Been to busy to mess with until today.........

Took the Explorer out on Road today & found that if i Manually shifted it it would go into 3rd & 4th, Also the cruise worked. When u try to take off in any gear other than 2nd u can feel it trying to pull, But will not engage?

Does this sound like valve body problem or Modulator?

Going to drop pan this weekend & see what i find..........

Check the vacuum line for leaking ATF from a defective modulator. Check the VB bolts to see if they are loose when you drop the pan. You could have bad gaskets if the bolts are loose.
