Seems there are a ton of threads describing the cold 1-2 shift and the failure of the transmission to go into gear afterwards. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the thread that says, "this solved my problem!"

I purchased my 92 Explorer 4x4 (120k miles) a few months ago when everything was fine. It wasn't too long until the trans started to have a slow 1-2 shift. I checked the fluid and it appeared to be ½ quart low, so I topped it up and that appeared to fix the problem (or so I thought). The next morning, when it was cold again, the delayed shift was back. I figured I could live with it for a little bit since I didn't need to drive the vehicle very often.

Two weeks later the transmission decides it doesn't want to go into drive. Put it in reverse, it engages, throw it back to drive - and viola - we're moving! Well, that only worked for about 3 days - now reverse won't engage either.

Fluid shows full, is darker but within acceptable limits and smells fine. I've yet to drop the pan to inspect anything because I wanted to get a tentative parts list before I dig in. Is this typically a valve body / governor issue or do I have more serious problems to worry about?

Change all the oil and the tranny filter and put a Lucas automatic oil additive High temp to it. I did it in mine and it made a WOW difference. But never overfill it.!!!! 9.5 liters in the automatic transmission you have juste like mine but calculate the 8.75 liters + 750 milliliters of lucas additive. They sell it for around 15$
