92 Explorer - Possessed

I went outside to get the morning paper and I heard a humming sound coming from the under side of our 1992 Explorer - V6 - Standard - 360,000 km. This sound is there with the ignition off and the keys removed. Something stays on draining the battery. What could this be?

is it coming from the rear? could it be the compressor for the self levelling suspension?

...pull your fuel pump relay and see if it quits...

Ya, it feels like its the fuel pump. The noise stops when I pull the fuel pump relay. Strange to me that the fuel pump would run when the ignition is off, though. This morning I started the engine and got to the end of my driveway and she quit. Now, only the occasional clicking from down under. Won't start.....

...and use a motorcraft relay. Simple and cheap fix, (common problem)

You were right ...... fuel pump relay. $44.00 Easy fix when you know what's what.

...thanks for the update and keep an eye on that....sometimes the cheaper relays go bad in a month or 2... sounds like you paid for a good one..

Thanks for the update! I've used the $16 relays from the auto parts stores, and they seem to last a while. I guess anything mass produced could be defective.
