So i bought a 92 explorer auto 4x4 yesterday. I did a short test drive since it was not regitered and seemed fine. Drove it 1/4 mile to friends house and let idle for 15 minutes. When i put it in D or OD it slips bad but if a put it in L1 it goes fine. Havent had it down the road again but my gut is telling me the trans is shot. I have read some posts here about valve bodies being gummed up and possible solenoids but wanted some input before just changing the trans. Any info or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, John

Check the fluid first.

Assuming you may not know how many miles are on the fluid, and being a '92.. it may have a ton on it.

Try dropping the pan and changing out the fluid and filter first before you get too far into anything. It may be that the fluid is worn and when it warms up the viscosity reduces not being able to produce the pressure needed to shift.

If that doesn't do anything come on back and start sifting through threads of the A4LD and all the symptoms of various problems submitted.

Update i got the truck home today and it only slips if i start out in OD but 1 2 and d seem ok...checked the fluid and its brown and a bit below the line. Will drop the pan tomorrow and change fluid and filter. While its down and i can see the valve body is there anything obvious i should look for? Thanks for the reply Brandon96!!

I'm not a trans pro by any means, I just think thats where one should start..

As far as looking for anything, check for metal flakes in the bottom of the pan, your pan should have a magnet on it to collect the fine dust-like metal, that's normal but give it a good wipe down. If you use water to clean it make sure it's completely dry before you put it back together. If you have excessive metal in the pan it will be time for a rebuild. You can remove the valve body if you'd like.. if it's gunked up with and type of residue of sorts your could try cleaning it to see if that helps, but again make sure there's no water going back into the tranny.

If it's only slipping in OD, that sounds like possibly a solenoid problem, possibly worn O-Rings.. something that is out of my knowledge.
There's an A4LD Rebuild Diary floating around the forum, if you read through that I'm sure you'll figure it out.

So i dropped my tranny pan today and found the filter almost completely plugged with grime. The fluid is black and nasty. Tomorrow i plan to do the trans flush as per the instructions on this site to get all the old fluid out. All i found in the pan was dust like metal attatched to the magnet. I am going to put the new filter in before doing the flush then if all goes well probably change the filter again in a few weeks. Does anyone recomend using anything like trans x after i flush the system? Thanks in advance

I have another question. Being that the fluid and filter are really dirty should i drop the valve body and inspect/clean it? I really dont want to as that is something i have never done before but just wondering if it would be worth it or just do the trans flush and filter...thanks

Update. I did a trans flush and it is working much better but from what i can find on here i think i need to do a vb rebuild and plan on using the transgo kit. The problem now is i cant start out in OD or it slips. If i start in D it shifts fine and if i shift into OD at 50 or so it does engage and works fine. Just wondering if there is a definate fix for this. Thanks in advance!!

I think my truck has gremlins. its been about 100 miles since the trans flush and its getting worse. It was starting out in drive fine but now slips a bit when warm, wont shift out of 1st while cold and when driving if we put the heat fan on high it starts slipping immediately but turn the fan to low and shifts ok. I also have noticedmy temp guage reacts to the trans as well. While in drive it bounces around but putting it in reverse makes the temp guage go all the way to cold. Is it possible there is a bad ground or electrical problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
